. good to have you with us, folks. thanks for watching. the new republican strategy is to take the american economy hostage when they don't get what they want. they realize their back is against the wall on tax rates for the rich, so they are turning their attention to another target, and it's a familiar one. here is tennessee senator bob corker talking about tax rates for the top 2% of americans. >> a lot of people are putting forth a theory, and i actually think it has merit where you go in and give the president the 2% increase that he is talking about, the rate increase on the top 2%. >> as usual, there is a catch. here it is. >> but republicans know that they have the debt ceiling that is coming up right around the corner, and the leverage is going to shift as soon as we get beyond this issue. the leverage is going to shift to our side where hopefully we'll do the same thing we did last time. and that is if the president wants to raise the debt limit by $2 trillion, we get $2 trillion in spending reductions. and hopefully this time it's mostly oriented towards entitlements

in an era of bain capital with e.j. dionne. good to have you with us tonight, folks. thanks for watching. the reality of the election is start to set in on members of the republican party. republican senator jim demint of south carolina is leaving capitol hill to become president of the heritage foundation. don't cry for demint. the out-going president of the heritage foundation made $1.1 million according to 2010 tax filings. demint will do just fine. it's not just about the money. the senator realizes he could be more effective for the conservative movement if he's not attached to the dysfunctional party known as the republican party. in a statement, demint said "i'm leaving the senate now but i'm not leaving the fight. i've decided to join the heritage foundation at a time when the conservative movement needs strong leadership in the battle of ideas." he was more to the point on cnn earlier today. >> this will give me the opportunity to help take our case to the american people and to translate our policies into real ideas. >> so you think you could be more influential within the cons
for it. >> good to have you with us tonight, folks. thanks for watching. tonight washington republicans are wasting our time. republicans are supposed to vote on john boehner's infamous plan b at this hour. the house is in recess as republican leaders basically are scrambling to get all the votes. house speaker john boehner pushed for a vote on the bill even though it has no chance of surviving in the senate. it would be vetoed by the president if it did. boehner's plan b. it makes tax increases permanent for income above $1 million. compared to the white house plan, basically, folks, it's a joke. president obama proposed a $2.5 trillion package. $1.2 trillion would come from spending cuts. $1.3 trillion would come from tax increases. plan b only includes $1 trillion in tax revenue and the rest of course is unspecified. it also includes no deal on raising the debt ceiling. president obama's latest offer takes the debt ceiling off the table for the next two years, which i think most americans want. boehner flat out lied to the american people today when he announced tonight's vote. >> pr
